We are the Korean carmakers biggest market in the world for this particular model, and it’s a chart topper in the passenger car sales race.
It seems us Aussies can’t get enough of the Hyundai i30. Maybe because the deals have been so good; in fact the drive away price for the entry level Active has been as low as $19,990 with free automatic transmission.
The i30 Active gets 16-inch steel wheels, body coloured bumpers, halogen headlights and fog lamps.
It’s got quite a big boot for a car this size – 378 litres with a full size spare under the floor. Jumping into the backseat, even with that generous boot there’s still quite an impressive amount of room.
There’s more than adequate headroom and loads of knee room, though the shape of the outboard seats leaves a bit to be desired. There’re no cup holders, no armrest or rear air vents and no USB or 12V either.
The cabin is neat and tidy in its layout, and storage is quite well accounted for up the front. It also scores a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto recently added as standard.
A rear-view camera is also standard, as is rear park assist and cruise control. Not bad for an entry model.
The Active and Active X are available with a 1.8-litre four cylinder engine and the SR and SR Premium have a 2.0-litre four cylinder engine – all available with either a six-sped automatic or six-speed manual transmission.
A 1.6-litre four cylinder diesel engine is available in Active, Active X and Premium variants.
The 1.8-litre engine produces 107kW and 175Nm so it should have a bit of get up and go - and out on the road the auto transmission is quite smooth when you’re cruising around at city speeds.
At higher speeds road noise becomes a bit more intrusive while the suspension is nice and supple – compliant even over some of the dodgier Sydney roads.
The i30 comes with Hyundai’s five-year unlimited kilometre warranty, lifetime capped price servicing plan and roadside assist.
No wonder these are selling faster than tickets to an ACDC concert – there’s nothing missing here. It’s spacious for a small car, above average warranty, a touchscreen, reversing camera, cruise control – and it’s a base model! Why wouldn’t you buy it.
